So, what is keto?
The ketogenic, or keto, diet is a high-fat, low-carb, and moderate-protein diet that aims to help with weight loss, mental clarity, and energy levels. The diet works by putting the body into a metabolic state called ketosis, where fat is used as the primary fuel source instead of carbohydrates. This happens when the body breaks down fat to produce ketones, which can be measured in the blood to determine if ketosis has been achieved. That is all a fancy way of saying, it is when your body burns its stored fat first instead of sugar its holding onto. Best way to reach that stage is to avoid pumping your body full of sugar - in any form. When is it we eat the most amount of sugar? when we snack! So, we've come up with a list of delicious and easy grab-n-go style snacks that the whole house can enjoy, and that the kids can help make!
No Cook Keto Friendly Snacks
Nuts and Seeds: Almonds, walnuts, or pumpkin seeds – these are a classic savory and crunchy keto snack. Have the kids mix and match shapes and sizes of their fave nuts , some unsweetened coconut shavings and seeds to create a custom snack mix.
Cheese: String cheese, babybel, or assorted cheese slices. Create a snack box with the nuts, seeds, cheese cuts and something else from this list.
Avocado Slices: A quick fix of sliced avocado with a sprinkle of salt.
Deli Roll-Ups: While deli meat isn't our favorite due to the high sodium count, snacking on deli roll ups in moderation is a great way to pack in the protein. Roll turkey, ham, or roast beef with cheese for a protein-packed keto snack on the go.
Veggie Sticks with Guac: Slice cucumber, bell peppers (green have less sugar), or celery and dip into guacamole for a savory treat. Mix up ripe avocado with chopped onion, garlic, a couple grape tomatoes, spices and you're good to guac!
Greek Yogurt Parfait: Kids can layer up Greek yogurt with berries, chia seeds, and a drizzle of their favorite keto-friendly sweetener for a dessert-style treat.
Hard-Boiled Eggs: Learning to cook the perfect hard -boiled egg has sparked a few debates in our kid-friendly kitchen. Some like them undercooked and slightly soft in terms of yolk while others like them more firm and with snap. However you prefer, these are a great, protein filled keto snack to keep on hand. Turn them into egg salad by mashing and mixing with mayo and mustard.
Caprese Skewers: Thread cherry tomatoes, mozzarella balls, and fresh basil leaves onto toothpicks for a refreshing bite.
Celery with Cream Cheese: Spread cream cheese on celery sticks for something simple and easy.
DIY Sushi Rolls: Seaweed sheets rolled around precooked shrimp and avocado is a great way to get that savory satisfaction that comes with sushi rolls!
